Lessons My Kids Teach Me. Part 712

I wanted to make a pit stop at the grocery store but, as is common among those in my age group, I forgot. I remembered just as I passed the road that that led to the store. " $%#&*@!"  I mumbled under my breath (or so I thought)

Rileigh: What, dad?
Me: Nothing honey.
Rileigh: What wrong daddy?
Me: Nothing's wrong baby.
Rileigh: Oh. [pause] Then why you say that: sonofabitch?
Me:  Uh, what?
Rileigh: You say sonofabitch.
Me:  [removing one hand from the wheel to slap self in forehead] Oh, I forgot to turn back there so we can go to the food store.
Rileigh: [in her patronizing, conciliatory tone- that sounds remarkably like what you would hear when someone is talking to a 5 year old who has just spilled his milk] It's okay daddy, we can go an "utter" way.
Me: Yes honey, we sure can go another way.
Rileigh: [giggling now] You're silly, daddy!

Yes, indeed I am silly.

Dog-gone Stupid

I am convinced that I am in the wrong business.

I took this picture while in a book store last week:

I apologize for the crappy picture, in case you can't read what it says,

Zen Dog

Music and Massage for a Stress-Free Pet

Enlightened Advice for Nurturing a Happy, Healthy Dog

The kit consists of a music CD , a plastic little palm-brush (to facilitate the Massage) and of course a book chock-full of 'Enlightened' advice. All for $12.95 What a bargain!

In case you are interested you can pick up your very own Zen Dog kit here.

From the product Synopsis on the Barnes & Noble site:

"De-stress Your Dog with Music and Touch. Tap into the power of music to calm your dog and learn the art of gentle massage to improve your pal’s mental and physical well-being!"

If I sat around the house all day licking my own balls, could be entertained for all of eternity by chasing my own tail, and was perfectly content to drink water directly from a toilet bowl- what kind of stress could I possibly have?

Im just sayin'.

Unbeluckingfievable!

Never underestimate the stupidity of people in groups!

Just in case you had any doubts about WalMart serving as the gates to hell... or the fact that we are just a couple discounts away from reverting to base depravity....

This story (hat tip to Lou)

I hope they track down and charge every one of those mouth-breathing, scumbag assholes with murder!

Exactly which, piece-o-shit-made-in-China-will-be-broke-or-thrown-away-before-baseball-season-comes-around-and-won't-even-be-appreciated-bit-of-garbage was on sale at such a low price, that it was worth trampling a man to DEATH to make sure you got one?

Today I hate people.

Career in medicine...yeah, great thinking on my part!

Seeing the Forest Through the Vagina

I don't consider myself to be a particularly wise man; in fact, even the most cursory of conversations with my wife will convince you that the converse is quite true.

I have however, gleaned a few important gems during the 19.7 or so odd million minutes I have been spewing out CO2 on this lovely little rock. For instance:

  • Toast will always land on the buttered side when dropped onto the floor.

  • Plumbers and proctologists should NEVER bite their fingernails.

  • You are most certainly more drunk than you think you are- and on a related note, signing voices rarely improve under the influence of ethanol.

  • It is universally accepted that the Emergency Department(ED) is the red-headed, bastard step-child of the hospital.

It is well established that the ED is the bane of many a medical specialties collective existence. After all, they are called to the ED to evaluate patients for for either admission (the horror!) or consultations as to recommendations for further care. This of course means more work, and that is seldom appreciated. This is but one of many the reasons that EDs have the much maligned reputation they do.

A brief disclaimer:
Since I have spent a goodly portion of my professional career working in and around emergency departments, I admittedly have a soft spot for those who suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune while mired knee-deep in a wonderful concoction of bodily fluids and human pathos in the trenches of America's hospitals. I assure you there are no finer a group of people you want to be around when the shit decides to hit the proverbial fan. These are my brethren! ;-)

Last night, I was once again, On-Call with the fine folks in The Vaginas and Pending Humans Department(VPHD). As usual, as if scripted, there was to be a battle with the ED. I would love to regale you with another yarn of how the ED in all of its glorious righteousness was simply "misunderstood", but alas kind reader, this was not the case.

It seems a young lady presented to the ED with complaints of sudden onset chest pain and associated shortness of breath. She also happened to be in the first trimester of a pregnancy. Perhaps this is what confounded the situation. The ED physician on duty "admitted" her to the VPHD with the presumptive diagnosis of r/o pulmonary embolism. Seems reasonable, right? Well, in this particular case the only treatment or diagnostics performed were a chest x-ray, the insertion of an IV and CBC and basic chemistry panel. Nary an ABG, EKG, cardiac enzymes, d-dimer, venous doppler, VQ scan, spiral CT or anti-coagulant was ordered.

I had 2 questions:
1. Is the OBGYN team the most appropriate choice for the management of a potentially life-threatening medical emergency?
2. While I understand a possible sense of reluctance to perform tests and or treatment that may be harmful to the fetus, isn't maternal death harmful to a first trimester fetus? I'm just sayin'.

The vagina, and in particular-the gravid vagina, continues to mystify and perplex!

Biting the Hand that Feeds Me***

Well fuck me with a fireplug, Frances!

I would like to immediately revise my heretofore atheistic world view and run, tail firmly lodged betwixt my cowering legs, to the sweet sanctuary of His Eternal Forgiveness. Even an old Paramedic can be wrong.

You see, I am certain the world is .....just...................about..................................done!

I have just read an advertisement for Slentrol.

In this day and age (when I was young we only had 3 channels and we LIKED it myeaa) it isn't exceptionally newsworthy that we be inundated with advertisements for many a wonder drug. Restless legs? Not a problem, we got a pill. Fibromyalgia? Not a problem, we got a pill. Can't get it up? Not a problem, we got a pill. Got PMS? Not a problem, we got a pill. Name a problem and the answer is inevitably the same, Not a problem, we got a pill.

But kind readers, this, this is a sign of the impending just desserts for our wickedness. Of this, I am certain!

Slentrol isn't a little pill designed to cure any particular problem you or I may actually have. In fact it is not for any member of Homo sapiens at all! (even if he has great insurance!)

Slentrol is formulated for the canine among us who are portly, husky, pleasantly-plump, undertall, ovewweight, big-boned, or despite how many crash diets, ab machines, or $9.95 videos he watches, [Fido] just can seem to loose those vertical love handles. Yes, Virginia, Slentrol is a DOGGONE DOGGIE DIET PILL.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Color me confused, but last I checked, Canis lupus familiaris hasn't evolved opposable thumbs, the ability to order in Chinese, or the cerebellar function to wrangle, even the smallest of sub-compacts, through the McDonalds drive-thru lane! Should Spot be a tad on the voluminous side, one would be best served to point the accusing finger paw at the hmm......I don't know....OWNER!

Can I get a WHISKEY TANGO FOXY FOXY FOXTROT up in here??

I couldn't even make this shit up check out the link for yourselves! ( I'll be brushing up on my Omnipotent Sky Daddy ass-kissing)

*** With all due respect, Big Pharma ;-)

EDIT: My FAVORITE PART OF THE AD: "Sentrol must never be used in cats"...I suppose those body-image absorbed felines are already prone to bulimia, with their constant purging and all ;-)

Pretentous Carnivores

I am no vegetarian, nor am I am animal rights activist. I enjoy a fine meal as much as the next guy. I have, on occasion, spent a small fortune on a very nice meal with an equally nice bottle of wine. For that matter I'm sure I have spent the equivalent to Moldavia's GDP on Scotch throughout my life. I have an appreciation for the 'finer' things. I get it, believe me.

But I read this story today and all I can do is shake my head.

You can go to the Wall Street Burger Shop in Manhattan and order yourself this:

It is a burger. More specifically a burger made with a Kobe beef patty, lots of black truffles, seared foie gras, aged Gruyere cheese, wild mushrooms and flecks of gold leaf on a brioche bun. Sounds good, right?

Well, one of these babies will set you back $175.00. Yes Virginia, that is One hundred and seventy five U.S. Dollars.

Sweet mother of tap-dancing decadence!

For a $175 I would expect a little more in the way of ambiance than to sit in a burger shop that has ketchup on the table! But I'm a snob I guess.

Proud to be Irish? NOT ME!

Traditionally the day set aside for speaking in a fake brogue, drinking green dyed beer, and generalized shenanigans, today is St. Patrick’s Day (moved by the Roman Catholic church to today from 3/17 to avoid conflict* with Holy Monday). Hallmark to today’s festivities is the festooning ourselves with a vast array of tchotchkes from leprechaun hats and shamrock pins to Kiss me I’m Irish T-shirts. We do love our T-shirts! One slogan however, got me thinking: Proud to be Irish.

According to my dictionary, Pride is defined as a reasonable or justifiable self-respect. Is it reasonable or justifiable to be proud of something that is devoid of any accomplishment or even effort? I mean, if I walked around with a T-shirt that said, Proud to Have Brown Eyes or Proud to Have Opposable Thumbs, it would be rather ridiculous. I have those characteristics by way of sheer genetic chance and through no achievement of my own. Being Irish is no different.

We should probably reserve pride for things we actually do. But I suppose this would mean that we actually have to do something. Who's got time for that?

Allow me to go off the reservation for just a moment:

Why are we so quick to add descriptive monikers to ourselves? Irish-American, Italian-American, and African-American are some of the labels still bandied about today; but why are they even relevant? At the end of the day, aren't we are all the same soul-less thought-less consumer pawns of the industrial capitalist complex anyway? ;-)

Isn't it enough to call ourselves American? Unfortunately, I suspect the answer is no.

We aren’t one people with shared principles and common culture. We are a loosely connected amalgam of tribes that have their own agenda, culture, and sometimes even their own language. Some would say that this is what makes America great, diversity. I am not entirely convinced. I think it would be an admirable feat of diversity that we could, coming from many different backgrounds, forge a unique identity for ourselves as Americans, foregoing the unnecessary modifiers.

Before you start accusing me of racism and having me fitted for one of those smartly tailored brown shirts, hear me out. As a result of the diversity that exists in America, what has developed is an environment of political correctness and a political process handcuffed by the fear of offending anyone’s precious culture. I will not rehash my views on the whole Political Correctness issue, as you can read some of my other posts on the topic. Suffice it to say that it is an entirely bad idea that does nothing but create a victim mentality and tosses personal responsibility in the trashcan. I do not advocate stripping anyone’s culture from them, but I think it would be in the best interest of the country to have its citizenry focus more on the American part and less on the adjective that precedes it. Perhaps I am being naïve, but I would imagine that the less we focus on what makes us different, the more we can get on with being a unified people.

Mick Rant Off.

Congress Needs Glasses, Will Be Blind Soon

OK It's now official. Our congress is now just as useless as the proverbial tits on a bull.
Congressional masturbation persists.
Following on the heels of the scathing denouncement of MoveOn.org's contreversial NYT ad, a representative from Colorado will introduce a resolution "condemning Rush Limbaugh's comments last week. Story here.

On Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show, that soldiers who disagree with US policy are "phony soldiers". I can hardly stand it anymore. In my opinion, Rush Limbaugh is a blow-hard douche bag; and his comments are the silliest things I have heard in some time. But I do not think it is the place of our (paid) leadership to waste time talking about this. In short, who gives a Vicodin-riddled shit what Rush said, or what MoveOn put in an ad.

To borrow a phrase from a fellow blogger:

THE STUPID, IT BURNS.

The Sound of my Head Exploding

AAAAARRRRGGGGG!!!!!!!

I can't take the stupidity. Whiskey tango foxtrot is wrong with our country? This story epitomizes the absolutely asinine, ridiculous climate of political correctness that abounds.

The US Navy has earmarked $600,000 for building renovations to one of its buildings in Coronado, CA. What wrong with the buildings you ask? Well, thats just it- the Navy is going to spend $600,000 to change the way the building looks.................

FROM THE SKY!!!!!!!

People have complained that the complex bears a striking resemblance to a swastika- the ancient symbol that the Nazi party hijacked in the 1920's. Obviously the people walking by would be offended right? Not exactly. The building's "controversial" design is not apparent from the ground. OK then I suppose people flying overhead in a plane would surely be offended, right? Wrong again. There are NO air traffic patterns, either commercial or military, that pass over the building complex. So why are people up in arms about it? Google Earth!

Yup, apparently people have looked at the satellite photographs of the area via Google Earth and got their panties all in a twist. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!! It's a building, people. GROW UP!

Reality Check Time: The building was built in the 1960's and has managed to offend exactly no one in all the time up until some idiot looked on Google Earth. The only way to see it is to actually, and purposefully locate and zoom in on the area from within the program. Offended by the "evil" swastika? I got an idea- DON'T LOOK AT IT!

Should our tax dollars be spent modifying a building that was innocently erected 40 years ago and up until this point has offended no one? I imagine that our military has more pressing uses for this money- say, for instance body armor for our soldiers, or prostheses for the several thousand amputees the war has created.

Congressional Masturbation

With American soldiers dying everyday, $700 million leaking out of our national coffers on a daily basis, over 40 million Americans without health insurance, and the threat of confrontation with Iran looming in the distance, it is comforting that our beloved congress has nothing better to do than engage in what amounts to political masturbation. Saber-rattling and grandstanding by congress is a waste of time. And doesn't the congress have more important things to do?

Yesterday the House of Representatives followed the Senate in their invertebrate fashion and passed a resolution condemning the infamous MoveOn.org ad that ran earlier this month in the New York Times.

The ad essentially is critical of the apparent discrepancy between the statistics offered by Petraeus at the congressional testimony and actual data. The ad claims that Petraeus' numbers are painting a rosier picture in Iraq because of the unorthodox method that the data is tabulated; for instance: deaths from car bombs are not counted, nor are assassinations included unless the person was shot in the head. The ad asks the question: "General Petraeus, or General Betray Us". Now regardless of your politics, I think it is key to keep one thing in mind:

NO ONE IN A FREE SOCIETY IS BEYOND REPROACH!

That means we get to ask questions and criticize and even say "Fuck Bush" in a college newspaper if we so choose. It is the one thing that defines who we are and is the backbone of a free society.

Doctor Smoctor, Take Your Child to an Exorcist!

Reason #147 that religion is generally a bad idea. This story from the associated press. Read the entire story here.

Sunday, in Arizona police responded to a call and found 49 year old Ronald Marquez nearly choking the life out of his 3 year old granddaughter behind a barricaded door. Why, would anyone do something so heinous? Enter religion.

Marquez and his 19 year old daughter-the 3 year olds mother, were performing a ritualistic "exorcism" to release demons from this child. The police reported that upon gaining access to the barricaded room, they encountered the mother covered in blood and "chanting something that was religious in nature". The grandfather was choking the young girl and had to be shot with a Tazer gun, twice, to free the girl and remove her to safety. On the bright side the grandfather promptly dropped dead after being taken into custody and was unable to be revived. Perhaps the exercised demons entered him and killed him;......that.......or the 100,000 volts of electricity that ran through his heart- twice. I guess we will have to wait for the autopsy. By the way they still haven't decided to charge the mother yet. In my opinion, not only should she be charged with accessory to attempted murder, child abuse, and a slew of whatever else the DA can come up with; She should undergo religious deprogramming. There is NO REASON WHATEVER to choke a 3 year old (even if she dumps a bottle of 18 year old single malt down the drain).

You are probably saying to yourself, Vince, this is just some crackpot who has an especially weird and perverted view of religion. Well you'd be wrong. According to a recent Gallup poll 7 out of 10 Americans believe in the devil. The Catholic church still sanctions the practice of exorcism. Among other faiths, many have differing views on demonic possession and exorcism; but it is widely practiced among many fundamentalist and evangelical Christian churches. To read more about what these groups believe in regarding possession et al click here. This is some seriously scary shit! Devils, demons, lions, tigers, and bears, OH MY!

There are many religious that practice exorcisms, but most famous among these is Bob Larson. He is the country's preeminent Protestant Exorcist. He has amassed quite the little empire for himself casting out supposed demons and fronting the DWJD (Do What Jesus Did) movement, whose mission is to: "preach the Gospel, heal the broken hearted, and set the captives free". Captives from demons I assume.

I wonder when we will be able to turn to science and reason to address problems and move away from this superstitiousness. Dum spiro, spero.

Scary times are upon us indeed.

Puritanical Terror!

Due to a recent windfall, courtesy of the generous blackjack gods, I decided to splurge and buy the Cadillac of baby swings. This thing is loaded: multi-speed, whisper-quiet operation, a automatic timer, built-in music with 15 songs! I want one for me!

Rileigh enjoys her swing, much like her siblings did, and there was joy in McDonoughville. However while enjoying the built in music I noticed something that I never noticed before.

One of the songs it plays to "soothe" babies is Rock a bye baby. I'm sure you are all familiar with this little ditty, but have you ever really listened to the lyrics. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

Let's review:

Rock-a-bye, baby [you'll notice it's not rap-a-bye or hip-hop-a-bye, but maybe that' just me]
In the treetop [the creationists won't be happy here- what the hell are humans doing in treetops?!]
When the wind blows [obviously a nod to the global warming effects on our planet]
The cradle will rock [so far so good]
When the bough breaks [uh-oh perhaps the evil logging companies and their deforestation are at work here]
The cradle will fall [Thank Newton, I wouldn't have it any other way]
And down will come baby [Sweet mother of Trauma!]
Cradle and all. [by the way, the cradle and baby will accelerate toward the earth at the exact same velocity-barring wind resistance of course]

Now, what the hell kind of baby song is this? I mean you got babies in cradles, unattended, falling out of trees. Trees, really? Who puts a kid in a tree? What sick demented bastard wrote this Charles Manson? Hitler? Dick Cheney? Well, I did a little research.

It seems Puritans are the responsible for this sick and twisted nursery rhyme. Yeah, those puritans. The same spartan living, Mayflower sailing, Indian killing, goth dressing, quaker oats cooking puritans.
According to my research the puritans used to hang their cradles from tree branches so that the wind would rock them to sleep and give the puritan moms time to ....to... continue to be sexually repressed, read their bible, churn butter, accuse each other of witchcraft, or whatever the hell else puritan women did. Apparently it was not uncommon back then to see trees festooned with multiple suspended cradles (during 18th century Tupperware parties I guess). Scary scary stuff.

So the next time you read or sing a nursery rhyme to your kids, pay attention to the words. Let's stop the cycle of acrophobia inducing, arbor vilifying, cautionary tales of parental neglect that only terrorize our children!

Back off Shrink.. I'm filled with the Ghost!

I know many of you are sick of hearing me rant on ad nauseam about my medical psychology class, to you I apologize, but today's hypocrisy has me shaking my head and in a 'ranty' mood.

We are covering 'somatoform disorders' - these ailments deal with the (not completely understood) relationship between the mind and body and how problems in the former lead to symptoms of the latter. During today's lecture we covered a particularly interesting one called Conversion Disorder. This particular diagnosis is 'pseudoneurological' and basically is the physical manifestation of neurological symptoms due to some psychiatric cause. For example: I accidentally walk in on my grandparents having sex and from that point on I am blind. Enter the dreaded DSM IV.

To diagnose this curious ailment a series of criteria have to be met. The most important is to make sure there isn't an underlying medical condition- in my example you would have to rule out retinopathy for instance as one possible cause of my blindness. So far it makes sense.

Here is where the psychiatrists lose me. Criterion D. states that the symptom cannot be explained by: medical condition, substance, or culturally sanctioned behavior or experience. Huh? What?? So if you are paying attention: YOU ARE NOT CRAZY IF EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT! I guess this means that Jim Jones and his kooky Kool-Aid crew were not nuts since all of them 'sanctioned' each other's idiocy. Once again the ridiculousness of psychiatry rears its ugly head by allowing "diagnosis by democracy".

As an attempt to explain the caveat of "culturally sanctioned behavior" our professor brought up the oft seen phenomenon of the 'speaking in tongues' or sudden epileptic-like spasms that the faithful have during some of the more 'animated' church services. Pardon the pun but has Psychiatry lost its mind?

Apparently we abandon all scientific reasoning here and allow for the 'holy spirit' to account for wild gesticulating , frothing at the mouth, shaking, and shouting unintelligible utterances, flailing about on the ground, passing out and temporary paralysis that some of these people experience. No shit?( if by some chance an atheist is in a church and behaves thusly how do we code that in the DSM? just a thought)

If someone displayed this behavior in a mall for instance, it would be looked at as abnormal to say the least. But if the same manifestations occur during a church ceremony (where it is culturally sanctioned) it is "normal". Hmm?

I don't want to make this about religious experience or the validity of certain beliefs but if we are to set some sort of scientific standard here when it comes to medicine, and psychiatry in particular, then it baffles me how we don't label this type of behavior with the same scrutiny just because it occurs during a religious service. This seems to be an unabashed attempt to be politically correct and not offend the devout by labeling them with the same diagnosis that we would place on anyone else exhibiting those same behaviors without the 'holy ghost' causing them. Hypocrisy abounds.

Where is HELL?

In case any of you were wondering about the specific location of the netherworld, I have solved the mystery. Go to Google Earth and type in the following coordinates: 18°27′00″N 66°04′00″W.

Yes, thats right, hell is alive and well in Puerto F-ing Rico!

Do I sound bitter? Perhaps. It's just that I am sitting at the San Juan airport right now when I should be about 10 minutes from touchdown in Philadelphia where I am supposed to attend my daughter Meagan's graduation ceremony this evening. My day started pretty well actually. I got up this am about ridiculous fifteen (5am) so I could get in another quick scanning of my pathology notes, shower, shave, and then rush over to the airport to check in for my 0950 flight. So far so good. Things went smoothly enough. I showed up on time and pretty much prepared for my monster exam this morning. I zipped through the test like...like..like a man who had a plane to catch! I was finished in about 45mins a pretty brisk pace for 75 questions, but I felt pretty good about it. Kathy was outside waiting to rush me off to the airport ala some rock star that just smashed up the stage. I confidently proceeded through security (with my previously obtained boarding pass) and was about to engage in some window shopping to kill time.

Something on the LCD monitors that display flight information appeared quite troubling even from 40 yards away...Red and Flashing are never talismans for GOOD stuff!
CANCELED.....blink...CANCELED ...blink....CANCELED This is where things turned decidedly NOT GOOD.

Today the Fire Rescue brigade decided that their 3 1/2 hour siestas were just too short and unfair. Since airport management wouldn't give in, they went on some sort of strike. So for safety precautions, they were not allowing 'big' planes to land; hence my plane scheduled to take me to Puerto Rico at 9:50 was not even going to be on the island! After some "trying not to be the ugly American despite obvious lack of customer service" diplomacy on my part I was booked on another flight to PR leaving at 12:15 with a connection leaving for Philly at 2:15. It would be just fine, I would make it to the 6:30 ceremony a tad late perhaps but I'd be there to see my baby get her little diploma in her cap and gown YAY!

But alas the aeronautical gods took a substantial sized dump on terra firma and named it Puerto Rico! Upon arrival somewhere around 1:50 we sat on the tarmac for what felt like forever, and then upon finally arriving at our gate*,
we waited some more. (and by 'gate' I mean a section of asphalt safely out of the 1.5 mile blast radius for the airport, you know, just in case terrorism should strike! ) The ground crew here make the workers on St. Maarten look like a pack of 8 year olds with ADD and a 4 bar-a-day Hershey's habit!

Needless to say, I missed the 2:15 flight. (interesting side note: this particular flight from SJU to PHL, according to USAir, has a 27% on time record...JUST MY LUCK today they are on time)

I wish this were the end of my sad tale of woe ... but... no (I'm rhyming again hehehe)

I somberly approach the USAir ticketing counter and explain my situation and ask to be booked on the next available flight. The nice man tells me I have to go to the American Airlines counter
(which is just about at the other end of the friggin island!) and they have to fix it since they were late. (Pot..Kettle..Black) So I walk, and walk...and.....walk. While I strolled, I made a vow to myself never again to judge too quickly those people I read about in the news who 'thin out the herd' from the top of a bell tower. Now the very friendly, personable, cheery (you smell sarcasm yet?) ticketing agent tells me I have to ......wait for it ........... WALK BACK TO THE US AIR COUNTER!!!!!!

My response (while I don't advocate it as a rule) in this case, was effective: I calmly told her, "Lady , if you tell me to go anywhere else you will wind up having me arrested." I think it was my deadly serious delivery that pushed some evolutionary button of self preservation in the staff , because suddenly they were helpful. Well, helpful in getting me back to Philly 3 hours late; if you consider that sort of thing helpful.

I will finish this tale later.. my flight is FINALLY boarding... now let's hope it doesn't crash.....

A Contribution to the Evolutionary Suggestion Box

Well, here we are T-minus 3 days and counting until the manufacturer's recommended due date and nary a pitter-patter to be heard around our house-save, our cats of course. Kathy had a visit with the obstetrician last Wednesday and much to her dismay learned she wasn't dilated at all and the baby was not particularly in launch-ready position. Aside from her suffering from her pregnancy associated affliction, (those who haven't read about it yet can do so here) she is beginning to physically tire from the joys of incubation.

I can't say I blame her. Rather a piss-poor design, in my opinion, to be carrying a tiny human inside your abdomen. With all the back problems, gait dysfunction, bladder issues, and positional compression of large blood vessels- perhaps evolution would have smiled on our species with a rearward facing gestational suite. Kind of a backpack baby. I mean it works for hikers and school students right? You never see someone walking around campus with their books affixed tightly about their midsection do you? Greenpeace voting, tree hugging, LL Bean wearing, and otherwise INSANE mountain hikers conveying their tents, sleeping bags, granola and whatever the hell else they carry are always seen with their cargo behind them. This makes sense to me.
The human spine with its curves is ill-suited to amble about with much weight in front. The ancient Romans figured this out with the design of arches. Evolution has been markedly slower to adopt this principle of physics.

So, for the record, I want to express my empathy and sympathy for my wife and all women who have endured the pain and suffering of carrying a child ventrally.

As the French say, "Vive la Difference!" As any man who has endured lower back pain after__________(insert over ambitious weekend project here) will attest, if it were up to men to carry babies.....

860 Non Politically Correct Words...(to be read while listening to The Battle Hymn of the Republic

This post, or rather the ideas expressed here have been a long time coming. There are many things that really bug me about our society, to put it mildly, but occupying a very high rank on that list would be our obsession with Political Correctness.

I don’t know for sure when it started. I’m sure that it has been an insidious process that has eroded away at our dignity for at least a couple of decades. What I am certain of, what I hope many more Americans wake up and realize, is that, IT HAS TO END! Why did this disease rear its ugly head? Who knows? Perhaps it was a misguided attempt to assuage deep seeded guilt or a deranged application of the “Golden Rule”. It could be that some of us are so very insecure that we take comfort at the end of the day knowing we haven’t offended anyone with our big, bad, ugly language. Maybe George Orwell had it right. He used the tern “Newspeak” in his novel 1984. Newspeak was language designed to avoid dissenting thoughts; sort of state imposed mandates for using euphemisms to maintain social order. To me, Newspeak is frighteningly close to political correctness. Whenever it started and whatever the reason, it is evil and does the exact opposite of what PC-ers say it is doing.

PC language does more to isolate people, point out differences, and mask reality; all things PC proponents state it is designed to fight. In an effort to not offend anyone our beloved mother tongue has been assaulted. No longer is it widely acceptable to use words that may offend feminists like fireman, or newsman, or even mankind. These have been replaced by perversions of language. Fire person, news person, and person kind do not exactly roll off the tongue; but they are used in an effort as to not hurt any feelings. Please! This is not limited to gender but other categories of PC as well. When I was growing up I lived next door to a retarded boy, around the corner from a handicapped[1] woman, and mostly our entire neighborhood was poor. I must have been on a different planet however because today I would be forced to say: “mentally challenged boy and physically challenged woman (or my favorite: differently-ableld). My neighbors and I would graduate from poor to 'financially underprivileged' or 'monetarily challenged'. While this flowery language may seemingly make you feel better to say, it is insulting to those it claims to protect. The physically challenged person is just as afflicted as the handicapped or the crippled.

Our language has evolved over hundreds of years borrowing words and phrases from just about every other language. The words we use all evoke a mental picture and some are more vibrant than others. It is supposed to be that way. It gives our language beauty and diversity. When we attempt to euphemize and sanitize our speech it clouds that picture leaving in its place a cold, dull, gray one. I imagine that is the goal in some cases. For instance we see on the news coverage of the war and we hear terms like ‘collateral damage’ or “civilian casualties”. It is easier to hear than “innocent people we killed”. Saying grandma is ‘eternally resting’, ‘passed on’, ‘with the angels now’, or even ‘extremely metabolically challenged” doesn’t make her less dead. Let’s all grow up a little.

My other problem with PC was illustrated 2 months ago with the Don Imus debacle. Those 5 silly syllables[2] he uttered got more media coverage (for over a week) than did the war in Iraq or any one of a thousand more pressing problems plaguing this society. We are absolutely obsessed with language when it comes to race. What he said was, in my opinion, lowbrow, tacky, crude, or even vulgar. Was it a “racist” comment? Well, if racist means that it is language used by a particular race, yes. His particular choice of words is mild compared to what is uttered, grunted, and rapped about in pop culture. This argument has been beaten to death and is beside the point. More to the point is this: What he said were words, just words. Arguably you may make a case for his being a racist. SO WHAT! In our country our fist amendment guarantees us the right to be an idiot. Did advertisers have the right to pull their ads? Yes. Did CBS have the right to fire Don Imus? Yes. But what upsets me is the maelstrom of opinions that bordered on a near frenzy for censorship that is based on a flawed principle.

While the premise of not calling someone names or hurting their feelings is sound advice if you want to be the most popular kid in your kindergarten class, somewhere along the way we got it horribly confused with an unalienable right that needs protection. We all need to step back and heed the other piece of equally sound advice proffered in kindergarten, sticks and stones may break our bones but words can never hurt us… unless of course, they are Politically Correct ones.

[1]The term ‘crippled’ had been forcibly eradicated from my vocabulary when I was a boy. Thanks, Mom

Stupid Congress Tricks and Why I Drink

On this day in history in 1918, congress passed The Sedition Act. It was designed to beat down opposition to the United states' involvement in World War I. This nifty piece of legislation made it illegal for pacifists, anti-war protesters, or any other scum-of-the-earth types to engage in the following: "making false statements that interfered with the prosecution of the war; insulting or abusing the U.S. government, the flag, the Constitution or the military; agitating against the production of necessary war materials; or advocating, teaching or defending any of these acts."
The more astute among you are scratching your head incredulously, and are assuming I am making this up. A law making it illegal to insult the government???? What the hell did stand up comedians, political cartoonists, and uncle Bob do for god's sake? These were dark times indeed.

This was not the first , or dare I say the last, in MONUMENTAL BONEHEAD moves our beloved congress has made throughout history. To name a few, Prohibition, The USA PATRIOT Act, and Declaring a National M.C. Hammer day! Although admittedly I may have hallucinated that last one while on a week long bender in the early 90's. (Damn, I miss my parachute pants)

Fortunately it only took congress 3 years to repeal The Sedition Act; meanwhile, alcohol spent 14 years hiding its glorious 2-carboned head in shame. Vindication for booze wouldn't come until 1933! Oh, the humanity!

My favorite Frank Sinatra quote: "I feel sorry for people who don't drink. They wake up in the morning and that's the best they're gonna feel all day." Amen Francis Albert, amen.
